Population Health Facilities Continue to Grow, Add Square Footage

September 14, 2022

In April of 2022, Power Wellness identified over 1 million square feet of ground-up development and/or major renovations of community fitness centers across 15 states. As of September 2022, institutions continue to plan, build new or renovate population health facilities. Our industry alert compilation uncovered an additional 1.9M square feet in the works or recently opened.

Healthcare systems and metropolitan areas of all sizes across the country continue to plan, break ground, build, and open new fitness / recreation centers. Some are building new centers in vacant retail properties (1), (2), others are using ARPA funds to renovate / improve existing facilities (3). While the projects vary in size and scope, they share a common focus on improving population health and community well-being.

Academic institutions are also resuming investments in campus-based recreation and wellness centers. In-person learning is back for the first time in two years, and many high schools, colleges and universities are building new or upgrading existing facilities to ensure students, student-athletes, faculty, and staff have convenient access to fitness and wellness programming (4,5,6).

For 25 years Power Wellness has helped plan, develop, and manage institutional fitness centers for health systems, municipalities, foundations, and academic institutions. We believe institutions can offer innovative and affordable wellness programs, focused on improving population health for people of all backgrounds and fitness levels.
