Helping Survivors Improve Mobility, Balance, and Confidence
Rush University Medical Center and Power Wellness developed a virtual exercise program for stroke survivors, expanding access to rehab from home. Participants saw measurable improvements in strength, mobility, and daily independence.

The Challenge
Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity in the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), from 2011 – 2013 to 2020 – 2022, U.S. stroke prevalence increased by 7.8%.(1) With this increase there is a vital need for post-stroke recovery and secondary stroke prevention programs.

In 2023 Power Wellness partnered with Rush University Medical Center to develop and implement the Virtual Post Stroke Exercise Program (VPSEP), a 12-week, online, structured exercise program. Based on the Fitness and Mobility Exercise (FAME) guidelines, and taught by specially trained fitness instructors, VPSEP was offered to outpatient Stroke Clinic patients who met specific physical criteria and had access to a computer, tablet, or phone with an internet connection.

Three patient groups have completed the VPSEP since its launch. Initial, or baseline outcomes across the Walk, Reach, and TUG tests were measured at the start of the program. Improvements are expressed as a percentage change from baseline, averaged across all participants:
